I’ve seen a respectable amount of live music over the last couple of decades, but sadly, several of the bands that influenced me the most have evaded me. One of those bands is Cake. If you were alive in the nineties/early aughts and even slightly aware, then you remember Cake, usually by way of Short Skirt Long Jacket, that, I Will Survive cover, or for sure the one about Going the Distance.
My cousin JD first showed me the song Rock and Roll Lifestyle on a compilation CD he got with a subscription to a magazine that I wasn’t cool enough to know about. That’s when I fell in love with Cake, and unlike most of the other things in my life to come and go since that mid-nineties moment, I never fell out of love with Cake. I guess there’s a lot to be said for keeping things interesting aka schizophrenic genre blending and the appropriately place trumpet solo.
Well, if you suffered a similar fate as me and never had your Cake, then now is our chance. Let’s take a little trip to Austin on September 18th and scratch that one off the bucket list.
Oh and did I mention Ben Folds will be there too.
