As I work my way through all seven seasons of The West Wing for the fifth or sixth time, I still find myself inspired watching these brilliant characters (birthed from genius writers and tremendous actors) always trying to do the right thing. I usually align my reprise screenings of this particular show with major election cycles since it tends to get me riled up about the state of current state as well as national and local affairs. When I watch The West Wing, I find myself wondering, where are the brilliant characters of my reality, of my state, country and city. The assholes are plainly visible in these systems, but where are the Josh Lymans, and the Sam Seaborns? I’d abandon my children for a real life C.J. Cregg. The only person I know that comes close, did his part for years and is basically retired. If you don’t get what I am talking about, or if you’d like to increase your IQ by a few points, hit me up for my Netflix password and watch this show.
This brings me to the latest local government disappointment, County Commissioner Carolyn Vaughn.
When the Nueces County Commissioners Court officially proclaimed June 3rd – 9th as Pride Week she felt it necessary to voice her disagreement with the declaration because she didn’t want to be associated with it.
“I want it in the record that I do not support this proclamation or agree with the statements in it” were some of her gross exact words.
Carolyn Vaughn you are a disgusting person. I will save the real name calling for a future issue when I’m a little less ignorant about the Commissioners Court, but for now I will say to you what I say to all religious homophobes… You are an idiot and on the wrong side of history. You are no different from those who opposed granting equal rights to women and minorities. Assuming your beliefs are based on Christianity, you are also a poor representation of a loving Christ.
The fact that you had to voice your personal anti-gay opinion while representing even the homosexuals of your district proves you are cheap and lack class. You are a bad representative for the people of your district. You are not on that commission to express your beliefs you are there to do what is best for the community.
And another thing… (I’ve always wanted to say that), What about all the other sins?
Greed – Hard to believe that in your years of government service, you haven’t or wouldn’t support an action that stems from some degree of greed. Will you be voicing your opposition to such things as well, you hypocrite?
Bearing false witness – Remember that time on City Council when you took campaign money from the Koch Brothers after saying how you don’t take those kinds of contributions. For shame, Carolyn, you phony!
Poor Shepherding (of the environment & resources) – Don’t get me started on all the decisions you have been a part of making that put our community in harms way when it comes to the air we breath and the water we drink. How much money was wasted during your time on City Council? Plenty I’m sure. So sinful.
I could go on and on, and probably will, online and in future issues. But as it is I can already feel this article is going to spill onto the next page like so much verbal diarrhea from faux religious politicians with bad haircuts.
Why do Christians always want to stand up against homosexuality? Do you not understand that Biblically, all sins are equal in the eyes of God? Or that the word sin comes from a word meaning: to miss the mark? Sinning is not a particular act; it is the act of not living a perfect life. Thus all are equal sinners. I’m not done…
Carolyn Vaughn, do you NOT think that adultery is a far greater threat to the sanctity of marriage? Maybe if bad Christians had to address adultery you would actually have to face the fact that your spouses are probably all cheating on you. Yeah, it’s much easier to don your version of what’s right and wrong than to operate in a Godly manner.
If you answer one question, let it be this one: Madam Commissioner, do you withhold your support from proclamations that benefit adulterers or divorcees or anyone that sins in any way, if not, then why did you voice your opposition toward the Proclamation of Pride Week in Nueces County? Psalm 17:10 – “ They close up their callous hearts, and their mouths speak with arrogance.” Take this advice from Psalms MS. Vaughn, open your tiny heart and close your big mouth.
